MORTEN STUDIO produced over 300 miniature dog and horse models as well as some wild animals during the years of 1931 and 1963. Oscar Morten was a fine sculptor of animal and human figures. He was a native of Sweden but moved to the USA where he formed a commercial gift-ware studio in Chicago in 1931. Mortens figures are heavy because each contain either a metal rod, skeleton or a tail or ears formed of metal. The figures were then covered with ceramic. Because the ceramic covered metal, there is much flaking and crazing in models exposed to extremes of heat and cold. Early dogs are marked on the bottom as "Durostone." Later models are marked, "Royal Design - Morten Studio". The cream of the crop is the show dog series marked, "I am a ...." or "Show Dog" on stickers. A little more than a dozen breeds were done in the show dog models. It is unusual to find Morten figures in perfect shape. Original cost of his figures ranged from $1. to $5 on the average. Today they run from about $25 to hundreds for the more rare breeds.
