ALBERT STAEHLE 1899-1974 is considered one of America's greatest
animal illustrator. He is the originator of "Smokey and the Bear", "The
Swan" soap symbols, and the precursor of "Elsie the Cow" .
"Butch", his real-life cocker spaniel, appeared on a total of 59
Saturday Evening Post and American Weekly magazine covers. He was
American's cover dog and was sworn in as the official mascot of the U.S. Navy.
Butch ended up on playing cards, greeting cards and calendars.
Staehle worked with Saturday Evening Post when they suggested that he think of a
cover to boost newsstand sales. Passing a pet shop window, Staehle found
the ideal subject and the fame of Butch began. Whenever Butch appeared on
a cover, it was number one in newsstand sales. |
